Voice AI Startup Play AI Acquired by Meta

July 14, 2025

Meta has acquired Play AI, a startup specializing in generating realistic, human-like voices using artificial intelligence.

A Meta spokesperson confirmed the acquisition, and also reported that an internal company memo noted the “entire PlayAI team” would be joining Meta next week.

According to the memo, PlayAI’s expertise in natural-sounding voice synthesis and its user-friendly voice creation platform aligns well with Meta’s goals in areas such as AI Characters, Meta AI, wearables, and audio content creation.

This move is part of Meta’s broader push into artificial intelligence, which includes aggressive hiring from OpenAI and a recent partnership with Scale AI. That deal brought Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang to Meta to lead a new team focused on developing superintelligent systems.

Financial details of the PlayAI acquisition were not disclosed. Bloomberg had previously reported that the two companies were in acquisition discussions.
